In 2017, a total of 25 prison visits were conducted, of which 14 visits were conducted in the Women’s Section of jails in Punjab and 11 visits were conducted in the juvenile section of jails in Punjab. During our visits, we recorded a total of 60 case summaries which point towards patterns in injustice and flaws in the justice system. Lacunas in the law and poor conditions in jail have been identified and recommendations made for reform with regards to overcrowding, the large numbers of under-trial prisoners, and allowing contact between prisoners and their counsel. Additionally, legal consultation was provided to a total of 75 prisoners in 2017. Last year 37 bail petitions were filed for women prisoners and 97 bail petitions were filed for juveniles.
